Facebook has long been the premier social networking community for those interested in sharing their personal experiences and wisdom with …

Facebook has long been the premier social networking community for those interested in sharing their personal experiences and wisdom with their inner circle of friends.

However, since it’s introduction to the general masses, and Facebook’s market dominance over the MySpace generation, the level of quality posts and intelligent conversations taking place within the Facebook Community have dramatically decreased.

Facebook users have become incredibly frustrated with Facebook App Spam, comment spam, harassing users/stalkers, and a multitude of other user produced annoyances.

I too, find myself overly frustrated with such daily annoyances that I’ve found myself in desperate need of purging users from my Facebook network. I’ve humorously titled this activity as “Spring Cleaning” on Facebook.

While some individuals completely understand my frustrations, others (typically the offending users), question the validity of my frustrations. It is to these clueless individuals, that I posted the following response:

It’s not that I don’t care about people, it’s the fact that some people [on Facebook] are like clockwork…

- Moaning and groaning during ALL holidays.
- Buy frivolous things while unemployed.
- Complain about financial problems, but attend “can’t miss” concerts & shows.
- Pissed-off during Valentines Day & Christmas, as if it was our fault they were single.
- 90% of their updates are: “I miss my _______ so much!”
- Failure to follow through, even when people try to help them.
- 95% of the updates they vomit onto Facebook are from Facebook Applications.

The level of idiotic comments and posts on Facebook have reached such epic proportions, that there’s even a Facebook spoof site called Lamebook.com, which is filled with posts and comments so ridiculous, it’s earned itself a permanent place in the Facebook Community, with posts and re-posts growing rampant throughout the Facebook Community.

If you fall within three or more of the above grievances I’ve stated above, or you’ve been featured on Lamebook.com more than once, you may want to consider finding a community more accepting of your idiotic ramblings. Consider the daily frustrations you’re causing your fellow “friends” on Facebook, and most likely other networks, and think about tuning down your rants. While many of your friends might not have figured out where the “remove from friends button” is located (bottom left corner of your profile page), you may want to take into consideration the thoughts and behind-the-scenes comments they are most likely saying about you and your profile.

Facebook Tips:

Remember, everything you post on Facebook (and on the internet) is PERMANENT. It’s crawled by search engines, it’s cached by systems like the Internet Time Machine, and it’s available to virtually anyone willing to search hard enough. Facebook is a great networking tool, but networking has the potential to produce both positive and negative results.

Be weary of what you’re contributing to the Community, because in fact, everything you post is indeed a contribution to the Facebook Community. Rest assured that those individuals that flood mediocrity, and especially idiocy into the Facebook Cloud, are indeed noticed.

If you don’t know the person requesting a friend connection, ignore it. If they continue to friend request you, message them to find out why, or simply leave them in your requests list. I call this “Facebook Purgatory,” because if you never ACCEPT or IGNORE their request, they stay in a PENDING status and cannot send another request.

Consider carefully who you TAG in your posts and photos, and take into consideration whether or not the individuals would want their friends being able to see the content you’re tagging them in, because rest assured, their friends will be able to see it; thus also exposing your entire album content to their friends.

Regularly “purge” your friends according to whether or not you really want to “stay connected.” We all have individuals of whom we consider acquaintances, but lack the type of friendship level to want to see their daily updates.

Facebook should not be a numbers game. Having 500+ friends is unrealistic, and simply becomes a Facebook Feed nightmare. Stay connected with only those you truly care about following and whom are entertaining enough to filter through. Don’t be afraid to “un-friend” individuals. It’s unlikely they’ll even notice.

RESPECT is a two-way street. Give respect if you expect to receive it in return. Just because you’d say it online, doesn’t negate the fact that at some point in your lifetime, you may end up having to explain yourself to that person face-to-face…

I was pleasantly surprised by the photographs produced by Courtney, as this was her first professional event. I look forward to seeing her portfolio and professional experience expand in 2010.

Durham, NC – Bralie’s Sports Bar has been a staple in Durham’s nightlife for years, and while some knew it as Arnie’s, many more have always known it as Bralie’s.

Bralie’s Sports Bar, named after a combination of the sibling owners (Brad & Leslie), is primarily run by Leslie Crabtree who is a local Durham, NC resident.

Recently, Ms. Crabtree came under heavy scrutiny by local media outlets for failing to abide by the newly effective North Carolina Tobacco Ban that prohibits the use of smoke producing tobacco products within all North Carolina businesses; only excluding non-profits and venues in which tobacco sales produce a majority of the transactions.

The complainant against Leslie Crabtree is Dan Richardson, the owner of Sunset Grille in Durham, which is a bar and grille establishment within proximity of Bralie’s Sports Bar.

Regardless of the validity of the claims pending against Bralie’s Sports Bar, which are completely based on a second-hand complaint, the fundamental key lesson I wish my readers to take away from this recent media fiasco is not whether or not Bralie’s was in violation of the North Carolina Smoking Ban; but the fact that regardless of what industry your business is inherent in, Social Media and Online Reputation Management can fundamentally change the desired outcome to one which may be the opposite intended.

The Bar Business is a Cut-Throat Industry

Bars have traditionally used such cut-throat tactics to put pressure on competitors. Typically, certain local area bar and club owners have been known to bring to light certain infractions regarding fire codes/regulations, Alcohol Law Enforcement regulations, marketing/copyright infringements, and other tactics which utilize tax payer resources to investigate complaints against competitors.

Why Should Businesses Reconsider Cut-Throat Tactics?

In today’s ever increasingly internet connected society, a fundamental lesson is becoming blatantly clear. Due to the increasing acceptance of Social Media technologies and Communities, businesses can no longer simply view their industry rivals as competitors, they must also consider the effects of their actions on their own clientele.

When Dan Richardson performed what is considered a “public service” by notifying the Health Department, it may have been a better course of action to have done it anonymously. One could assume that by blowing the proverbial “whistle,” that Sunset Grille may have gotten some positive press for helping the Health Department.

However, as it turns out the audience that frequents Sunset Grille was less than enthusiastic about the complaint. This is not to say that Mr. Richardson did anything wrong. In fact he did indeed do what any concerned citizen should have d0ne, but what Mr. Richardson failed to do was to adequately engage and understand his own clientele.

The North Carolina Smoking Ban is a highly controversial topic which remains fresh in the minds of many North Carolinians, especially since North Carolina was built upon the tobacco industry.

However, those that frequent nightlife venues such as Bralie’s Sports Bar and Sunset Grille are also a unique group of patrons. Many nightlife venue owners can validate the fact that is it often difficult to gauge how their patrons may react to even the littlest of things.

The Sunset Grille Case Study

In Mr. Richardson’s case, his public complaint against Bralie’s Sports Bar did in fact cause some patrons to reconsider their loyalties concerning his establishment. Social Media and the internet have made traditional practices within the bar industry finally come to light, and for their patrons to decide whether or not the tactics deployed by their favorite pub should be commended or reprimanded.

As of currently, various news organizations have picked up the story since Friday, January 8th, including ABC, NBC, and the Herald Sun. The articles were quite neutral regarding Mr. Richardson’s involvement in the complaint, however, comments from the readers (and on other online communities) were less than neutral.

“Dear Sunset, Great publicity for Bralie’s. Fail! Love, Former Sunset Customer”

“The complaints coming from another “local bar” are just a joke. Sunset Grille, as a now former regular Customer, your childish “snitching” just lost you a regular Customer.”

“Boy, what a way to “Level the Playing Field”, Never have been to The Sunset and now will never Go. BOYCOT THE SUNSET GRILLE, What a Doorknob.”

Lesson Learned, the Take Away…

The emergence and general adoption of social media trends over the past three years have brought to light a very important lesson which business owners must take into account. Now more than ever, it’s the PEOPLE that business owners must focus on, and less on their competitors. Social Media has changed the dynamics of businesses and marketing.

Today, businesses are no longer what they TELL their customers they are, but what their customers SAY that they are. Meaning that it’s not enough to promote how wonderful your business is anymore. Businesses must win over their customers, and convert them into brand evangelists. Customers are more likely to trust a business due to a personal recommendation, than from any marketing collateral they may stumble across.

If businesses don’t start focusing more on their own clientele, their needs, their wants, and turning them into brand evangelists, they will find that their customer base will shift to competitors that do.

Cut-throat business tactics are no longer in the shadows, and regardless of whether or not a rule or newly effective law was broken, the way a business conducts itself can result in hugely different reactions from their own clientele.

I’ve frequented both establishments and the service and environments of both venues is commendable, but public bickering and cut-throat tactics could easily sway my own personal venue selection, and while I am obviously a vocal clientele, I can guarantee that I am not the only one in the area.

Some situations require a certain level of anonymity and tolerance, while other situations should be brought to light. This entire situation between Bralie’s Sports Bar and Sunset Grille should have been handled with a little professional courtesy; a simple email or call to say “I just wanted to give you a heads up that smoking isn’t allowed in venues anymore. I’d hate for the Health Department to issue you a fine…” would’ve been a positive outcome for everyone involved.

So in closing, if you’re a bar owner (or owner of any business that deals with clients in person and online), please focus your energies on positive customer experience, engagement, and building brand evangelists; and please leave out the archaic cut-throat tactics, the people are watching, listening, and speaking…

Push Notifications

Push Notifications via your iPhone will finally allow Facebook to send you those nifty little SMS-like messages to notify you on such things as new messages, wall posts, friend requests, friend confirmations, photo tags, events, and comments.

It may be worth taking some time to customize your notification settings as to avoid being spammed too heavily by Facebook though.

Contact/Address Book Syncing

While this is a welcome and much needed utility for those of us that use Facebook to maintain personal connections over vast distances, the native Facebook Address Book Sync seems rather elementary compared to a third-party application that I use called SmartSync.

Native Facebook iPhone Application

Settings only allow you to specify whether or not you’d like the app to overwrite the existing contact photos for any contacts that Facebook syncs with your iPhone’s address book.

SmartSync iPhone Application

Allows you to specify a far greater selection of options to customize the way Facebook contact data is synced with your iPhone Address Book.

Photo Syncing settings allow you to not only specify whether or not to replace existing photos in your address book, but also specify the size and image quality of the contact photos.

SmartSync also allows you to customize the data which is syncing between Facebook and your iPhone Address Book, whereas the native Facebook Application automatically syncs all data without user customizable options.

A recent CNN article highlights the controversy surrounding BeautifulPeople.com, a dating site that markets itself as an elite community for beautiful people with a “strict ban on ugly people.”

The admins of BeautifulPeople.com have recently exiled 5,000 members for gaining too much weight over the recent Holiday season, and the public is outraged, as can be expected.

While I disagree with the discrimination of individuals for gaining a few pounds over the Holidays, I must however, agree with the admins of BeautifulPeople.com for upholding the principles and values of their online community.

I understand that to many, the above statement seems contradictory, and in some ways it is. An individual must look at both sides of the story to truly understand the purpose behind the actions taking place within this community.

Why Did This Happen?
BeautifulPeople.com was founded as an elite online dating community; founded on the niche premise that all members must be “beautiful” in the eyes of community members. Therefore, under those terms, the 5,000 members in question were flagged by their fellow community members as no longer meeting the criteria for membership within the community. The administrators simply upheld their principles and values of their niche community and swiftly retracted membership to the affected 5,000 former members.

Is This Wrong?

Well, in the court of public opinion, is seems that many are outraged by the decision and have taken a negative stance toward the site. However, in terms of proper community management, values, and standards, the site admins did exactly what should have been done to preserve the community of which they founded.

Why Should Communities Uphold Fundamental Principles?

One of the fundamental challenges of both online and offline communities/lodges/clubs, is that failure to uphold the fundamental values and principles of such communities, can and often will be detrimental to the membership quality of said community.

Many online communities boast about their niche memberships, yet they often allow anyone to join their ranks for sheer numbers. Facebook was once a niche community of College and University alumni, until they opened their doors to the general public. With the sudden influx of members that did not share the commonalities of the original members, some of Facebook’s original membership have since moved on to other communities that still preserve the types of niche communities they value the most.

As a former Sysop/Admin of various online communities, I urge fellow Community Managers and Admins to setup fundamental principles and values for your communities, and to preserve them as much as possible. While this strategy may hinder membership growth initially, it will however, dramatically increase membership quality. Some of the most successful online communities are based on a high quality membership base which acts as the foundation for future growth and success.

As many loyal BrightKite users already know, BrightKite has been down for the better part of 72 hours and the BrightKite Community has been awaiting it’s return. This extended service interruption was a result of their BrightKite 2.0 release that was only supposed to take a few hours. Obviously, there were some serious hiccups along the way, but finally BrightKite 2.0 arrived at approximately 3AM EST (GMT -5) Friday morning.

Change Log Details about the 2.0 Update can be found at: http://blog.brightkite.com/2009/10/06/its-here-brightkite-2-0

However, almost immediatly upon the release of BrightKite 2.0, bugs were once again sprouting up like a wild patch of Kudzu with an IV of Miracle Grow tapped into its roots…

Facebook & Twitter Integration
Early this morning I began testing BrightKite’s Social Media integration modules to verify their operation. I quickly realized that neither Twitter nor Facebook were receiving my BrightKite posts, even though the admin panel indicated otherwise. I was able to rather quickly and easily disconnect the FB/Twitter feeds from within BrightKite (and I verified this from within the admin panels of Facebook and Twitter), then I reconnected the feeds which got integration working again.

As the morning progresses, reports continue to pour into Facebook, Twitter, and on Brightkite about the sporadicness of the SM integration. I assume that the BrightKite engineers are hard at work trying to get this functionality fully operational again. If the above procedure doesn’t produce results, I suggest giving it an hour or two and try again later, as they might be in the middle of fixing it as of currently.

Mobile SMS Notifications
While checking the other settings within BrightKite, I noticed that my account was no longer associated/authorized for my mobile number, but was authorized with an unknown number which I did not input into the system. It was quite easy to designate my correct mobile device number into the system, but it would be beneficial to anyone who uses SMS (text) Notification Messages from Brightkite, to at least verify that your information is indeed still correct.

Flickr Integration
Another quirky issue with BrightKite 2.0 is the fact that Brightkite is currently sending my images to Flickr and tagging them as PRIVATE posts instead of PUBLIC, which is what BrightKite used to do. Depending on your preferences, this may be ok, but for me personally, it defeats the purpose of sending the photos to Flickr if I can’t share them with my friends and family.

Placemarks within the BrightKite Mobile & iPhone Applications
Finally, I also noticed that within the Brightkite mobile web browser and the iPhone application, not all of my placemarks were showing. I think it’s safe to assume that when Apple finally approves the BrightKite 2.0 iPhone Application, that this should be fixed.

Lauren and I decided to go for a quick ride last night that turned into for us, an epic 8.09 mile trek across southwestern Cary, NC. We started from the Kroger at the intersection of Hwy 64 and Lake Pine Drive, and biked through Picardy Pointe and the Highlands, where I grew up so many years ago.

Crossing over Cary Parkway, we ended up at Annie Jones Park and jumped onto the Greenway and rode behind AppleCross and Colonial Townes to Lake Pine Drive and Cary Parkway (Grocery Boy Jr.). We then headed up Cary Parkway till we hit Kildaire Farm Road, where we stopped in at Trader Joes for some snacks and had a small dinner at Subway.

Afterward, we headed back through the neighborhoods behind Kildaire and reconnected to Lake Pine and down to Camden Lake Apartments which border Apex Community Lake.

All in all, it was a very challenging ride for us, especially since we just started cycling two weeks ago. Lauren and I are definitely feeling a difference, and we’re excited to see where our travels takes us next!

RunKeeper is a mobile fitness application that makes fitness tracking and training easier to use and more fun. Currently, it’s only available on the iPhone, specifically the 3G and 3GS versions due to the use of GPS functionality for tracking speed and altitude.

Since @LaurenWong and I have recently picked up cycling, we decided to go for a night ride through Apex Community Park & Lake in Apex, NC. I decided to finally give RunKeeper a real test, since I had installed this application months ago, but hadn’t had a reason to test it out.

As you can see from the iPhone screen captures below, the GPS tracking isn’t perfect, but for a free application, it did a great job of tracking our speed, location, pace, and altitude. RunKeeper has settings for various activities like Running, Cycling, Walking, Hiking, Downhill Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Snowboarding, and Skating.

All of the data is displayed in various graphs available on the RunKeeper.com website. Through Twitter, Facebook, and Social Bookmarking services, you’ll be able to quickly and easily share your adventure with all of your friends.

While I’m not training for a marathon or cycling competition, I can easily see how this data can be beneficial to those who are. The various activity settings allow for specific tracking of the sports/activities you enjoy.

The application itself is very easy and intuitive to use. There are large buttons which help when engaged in your physical activity. You can still listen to your iPod Music Library while you workout, and there’s both a manual PAUSE button, as well as an automatic PAUSE for incoming phone calls and text messages. Simply RESUME your activity after you’re done with the call/message.

The Mph display and Miles traveled data is useful for me personally, but RunKeeper does appear to lack the ability to track steps (pedometer), though this doesn’t really affect the activities that I’ll be using RunKeeper for. This feature may be hidden in some of the other settings, but if not, it would be a great add-on to the RunKeeper application.

Overall, I enjoyed using RunKeeper for our late night cycling adventure, and we plan to use it for all of our future adventures, so check it out at www.RunKeeper.com!

A Video Shout-Out to #Black&Decker for Their Excellent Customer Farming

While at Walmart last night, Lauren and I decided to walk through the toys section to look for some more games for our “Game Nights” that we’ll sometimes throw.

I was quickly intrigued at how advanced the toys are today, a smorgasbord of trinkets and gadgets with lights, motors, and all sorts of other onboard electronics. However, what really caught my attention was the Black & Decker kids toys. The packaging and tools sets were quite consistent with their REAL tool sets.

There are entire 16 peice and 45 peice tool sets, not unlike those you’d find at your local hardware store. They had motorized yard trimmers, leaf blowers, and virtually every other type of Black & Decker tool that they carry for adults.

Suddenly, it struck me at how incredibly genius this simple concept is. Black & Decker has successfully built a business model that targets potential buyers from their earliest stages. By providing a children’s line of toys, they’re able to farm future clientel whom will be used to their brand, and hopefully will associate their childhood memories with brand loyalty in their adulthood.

This is not a new business concept, but it is a perfect textbook example of the concept in “play.”

Trapster is a mobile-device based application and website, which integrates social networking and crow- sourcing perfectly.

The application is provided for free, and it utilizes Google maps for GPS mapping.

Trapster maps out and alerts users in real time about user reported:

LIVE Police Speed Traps

Red Light Cameras

Speed Cameras

Areas Police are Known to Often Hide

The application also allows users to:

Access iPod Music Library

Record Trip Data

Share Data via SM Sites like Facebook & Twitter

Trapster currently works with Blackberry, iPhone, Nokia, Android, Garmin, and TomTom devices.

Coming Soon: Palm Pre & Windows Mobile Devices.

The mobile application utilizes Wi-Fi or GPS to pinpoint the user’s location, and provides voice alerts or text messages when the user is within range of a reported “threat.” Threats are rated and weighted by the number of users that “agree” or “disagree” with reported traps.

Trapster Version 3.5 iPhone Application Review

Those of you that follow me on Twitter, @NauticalUrge, know that I am an avid Trapster evangelist. I make a sincere effort to post traps whenever I can safely do so. Therefore, I am excited to say that Trapster 3.5 is a most welcome update to an already great application.

Dynamic Directional Mapping vs. True North Mapping

A feature that many Trapster users have been asking for has finally been added to Trapster, is the ability to choose between True North and Direction-of-Travel Mapping. Choosing the latter allows you to have your direction of travel face up on the map, so that you can more easily see what is coming ahead of you when headed a direction other than North.

Additional Bluetooth Audio Options

This is a feature I don’t personally utilize, but it’s a convenient feature for those with the accessories to do so. Trapster is now capable of various in-car bluetooth setups like being able to push audio out via A2DP, or via other bluetooth audio accessories. Trapster automatically pauses your music during voice alerts and notifications.

Access to iPod Music Controls

Trapster now has a built-in function that allows access to your iPod Music Controls. This prevents accidental application closures when trying to double-tap to get to your iPod music. Your music can either automatically pause for voice alerts, or you can have the voice alerts play over your music.

Trapster Trips

Recording trips within Trapster has gotten much easier with a static icon placed on the main screen, which allows for quick and easy posting of trip photo and notes.

Real-Time Traffic via Google

Google utilizes data from it’s users to display real-time traffic data, and Trapster utilizes this data in their latest application update.

Multi-Language Support & Sound Themes

Trapster’s voice alerts are now available in different languages and themes, such as a “Austin Powers,” “Homer,” or “Sponge Bob.”

Notes from the Author

Trapster is one of my favorite iPhone applications, and many of my friends follow my tweets and use the application to simply be aware of known traps, but as you’ll find with many users and non-users, opinions about the application are mixed. Some people are of the opinion that Trapster encourages motorists to violate traffic safety laws, while others believe that Trapster actually assists law enforcement by allowing the motorists to encourage each other to slow down in specific areas.

Law Enforcement officials too are divided on the issue. Many local law enforcement officers whom I’ve spoken to approve of the application because it ultimately produces the same desired results as police officers expect, but with much less labor-intensive hours devoted to tickets and court-cases; thus freeing law enforcement officers to focus on actual crimes in the area.

Personally, Trapster serves the same purpose as Speed Limit signs and Mobile Radar Stations. The ultimate goal is to encourage motorists to SLOW DOWN and pay more attention. Having a dash mounted mobile device providing voice alerts is not more than an audible speed limits sign saying “Please slow down and pay attention!”

There have been multiple discussions on whether or not Trapster should be illegal, and whil it currently is NOT illegal, I doubt very much that the application itself could be “banned,” as it would in essence violate individuals’ freedom of speech and expression.

However, Trapster could very well find itself once again in the spotlight if States consider mobile applications to fall under these new laws against texting while driving. Only time will tell as to the future of such mobile applications, but for now my hat goes off to the Trapster Team for developing such a useful and full-featured mobile application that actually produces a valuable benefit to users.

Change has Come: Technology and New Media

On Saturday, September 19th I had the honor of participating on a panel discussion on Technology and New Media at the iMedia 2009 Workshop, organized by MEP, sponsored by DMI, and hosted at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC.

The audience was comprised of local High School and College students interested in Media and Journalism, at a time when changes are as rampant and unpredictable as crude oil prices.

The basic premise for the discussion was on the influence and use of new media, blogging, social media and new technology in producing the news in both broadcast and print journalism. Our goal as panelists was to provide information and best practices of which these students would need to know in order to compete; while utilizing ways to use these new technologies to their advantage in the workplace.

The following are just a few of the key points which I wanted these students to take away from this discussion:

Personal Branding

As social media technologies erode away at the foundation of traditional media, it seems imperative that today’s journalists capitalize on their personal brands. In the past, many journalists and reporters put great emphasis on associating themselves with the brands of the major media and news networks.

However, as social media technologies acquire more and more users, and as these technologies integrate into mobile technology, the need to build one’s own brand has never been more crucial. Media end users have a virtual smorgasbord of media consumption methods, and therefore, have devastated traditional mediums like magazines, newspapers, television, and even radio; which once stood as the medium giants of their day.

In order to truly be successful in today’s digital age, media professionals must begin to develop communities of followers, readers, and fans. Through social media technologies and communities, journalists can now receive instant feedback on their work, and even cater their work to meet their followers on a much more personal basis.

As more and more newspapers and media organizations downsize their mediums and staff, I predict that these media organizations will rely more heavily on contractors rather than hiring full time staff members. This was a key point supported by fellow panelist Sam Methany of the Capital Broadcasting Company.

A perfect example of niche journalism is the lack of Sports coverage in the Triangle area, especially in the area of High School athletics. Most of the area papers have reduced their sections so drastically, that High School sports have virtually no coverage compared to years past. Seasoned journalists could seize such a perfect opportunity and publish their own small town publication, or even a simple blog which could provide the coverage that consumers demand in that specific field of local journalism. In time, and the right usage of social media best practices, this small publication could attract enough online traffic and notoriety that larger news organizations could utilize the traffic and content from such a blog, and integrate it into their media on a third-party vendor/contractor basis.

The key to such a concept is simple: Personal Branding, Quality Content, and Effective and Streamlined Social Media Best Practices.

New Media is as simple as “Nurture vs. Nature”

I have struggled to find an analogy that could quickly and effectively relay this simple concept, and fellow panelist Sam Methany stated it best when he said that New Media is essentially the difference between “nurture verses nature.”

To put it quite simply, much of the “Baby-Boomer” generation has had a difficult time adopting new media concepts and technologies. Much of this segment of the population has had to be nurtured, even hand-held as they attempted to learn, understand, and integrate such technologies into their work, and in some cases, their every day lives.

The current generation of teens and college students are in contrast, much more adept at using new media technologies because they have by nature, born with these technologies already present in their every day lives. New media like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Text Messaging, Instant Messaging, and others are already heavily integrated into the society they were raised into.

The true challenge is not identifying those whom are nurtured verses natured, but finding the middle ground where which the two groups will intertwine. The problem is that as today’s younger generation adopts these new media technologies as mainstream, they are missing the wisdom and experience that older generations have learned from decades of traditional media and journalism. There is much that both sides of the line must be willing to sit down and learn from one another before there can truly be an equilibrium.

The key point from this is simple, there is a fine line that must be balanced by today’s journalists; SPEED verses ACCURACY. All too often you hear about journalists who don’t do their due diligence and post content that hasn’t been properly researched, only to find out later that the information was inaccurate, and thus causing devestating damage to their credibility.

In a world of lightning fast data, journalists must be weary of false information, and maintain traditional media methods of quality research and attention to detail, while balancing the need to rush the content to consumers before their competitors.

In Summary

Today’s new media tsunami of tools, devices, software, and communities have caused a rift between those nurtured and those whom view such technologies and trends as natural. Information is consumed by society in epidemic proportions, and it’s increasingly difficult for journalists to maintain quality verses quantity in a digital age. Furthermore, as more and more media outlets fall to the new media torrent, journalists are having to take ownership of their work, their careers, and their personal brands in order to survive the flood.

However, there are great benefits to this, the “Great Flood of New Media.” Today’s newest generation of journalists and beyond, will bare witness to a new digital enlightenment of mankind. More than ever before, we as a species are more connected and more in tuned with the trivial daily thoughts and actions of our peers. From mobile devices to text messaging to video blogging and conferencing, human beings are able to track every thought and movement of their favorite celebrities, or even just the guy down the street.

The real question is this… what will future generations do with this wealth of seemingly mundane information, and how will they cope with the eventual recession of the new media flood waters?

Miranda Lambert performing at City Limits Saloon in Raleigh, NC on February 26, 2006

It was a pleasure photographing Miranda Lambert at CLS. Her energy and passion for her music energized the crowd, even though it was quite apparent that she has just gotten into town just for this specific concert. It’s truly amazing how musicians are able to keep such a hectic lifestyle.

Recently, I decided to revisit the photos that I had taken at the concert, and digitally edited them for creative effect. These are a few of the photos that I selected for creative edits…

Since the weather was so beautiful this past Saturday, we decided to re-visit the Southern Village Disc Golf Course in Chapel Hill, NC.

Lauren (@LaurenWong) and I (@NauticalUrge) were joined by Amber Neill (@Amber9904) and Brad Gurley (@BraddyG). This was the first time Amber had ever played Disc Golf, and she performed amazingly well, though she might think otherwise. As we progressed from hole to hole, Amber was able to fine tune her “tomahawk” and “wobbly-disc” throws, lol!

Southern Village is still very much an unfinished course with heavily varying terrain and obsticles, thus making it a perfect technical course rival to the Buckhorn Disc Golf Course in New Hill, NC.

All of the tees at Southern Village are still only simple dirt pads, marked only with small contruction marker flags, but there are sign posts that provide Hole Number and Distance to Basket.

Due to the fact that we started our game in the latter part of the afternoon, we were only able to play the front nine, but we all enjoyed our short game, and Amber has finally been introduced to the world of Disc Golf!

Overall, I think that the Southern Village Disc Golf Course has the potential to be Chapel Hill’s version of Buckhorn DGC (New Hill, NC). The terrain is well mixed, but with only one slight water hazard, a small retention pond approx 50 feet in diameter near Hole #9.

Therefore, the scenery is much more like Cornwallis DGC in Durham, NC or Kentwood DGC in Raleigh, NC – just on much more land, and segmented. Notably, there are some long distance technical holes that require both pin-point accuracy, as well as long distance power and drive. There’s a 500+ ft hole on the front nine that challenges players of all levels!

Note to New Players:

I would definitely not classify this course as a beginner’s course, regardless of what state the course is in.

The heavy woods will have a tendency to eat up discs, while the heavy leaf coverage will also conceal your discs, so keep a keen eye on them. You’ll also want to bring comfortable shoes that will support your feet on rough terrain, as part of the course require going up and down fairly graded hills.

Melanie and I have been close friends ever since we first met. Her personality and humor is contagious, and anyone that has ever been touched by her friendship, knows how truly special people like Melanie are in the world.

For weeks, we’ve talked about doing a downtown themed photo session, but due to our schedules and weather, we weren’t able to get together.

However, this weekend we were finally able to coordinate our schedules and shoot out in downtown Raleigh, NC in the beautiful North Carolina weather. Accompanied by her long time best friend Heidi, and my beautiful wife Lauren, we produced some great shots in just a few hours and two locations…

On Wednesday, September 9th, Apple released the iPhone 3.1 software upgrade. As expected, Apple’s servers were bombarded with traffic, but thanks to a file of projects on my desk I avoided the train wreck that accompanies iPhone software updates.

This evening, I was able to quickly and easily upgrade iTunes and our iPhones. However, I quickly realized that after upgrading to iTunes 9.0.0.70, I was not able to sync my iPhone 3GS to my laptop. In fact, all the system would do was return the following error code:

iTunes could not connect to this iPhone because an unknown error occurred (0xE8000065).

SOLUTION:

After a while, I was able to figure out that the sync cable (iPod) that I typically use to sync my iPhone at work, doesn’t work with the new software upgrades! So if you’re getting this error, you MUST sync your iPhone with a genuine iPhone cable!

Rest assured that there’s already an extensive library of articles chronicling Apple’s latest iPhone software innovations, so I’ll just provide you with a “Cliff Notes” version of what to expect from the iPhone 3.1 Software Update.

Apple’s extended its Genius media-recommendation algorithm to iPhone applications. It looks at the apps you already own and makes recommendations based on that information.

Enhanced Ringtone Purchasing & Features.

New Syncing Options for Households with multiple computers.

iTunes gift cards, codes, and certificate redemption in both the iTunes and App Stores.

Ability to save videos from both Mail and MMS into the iPhone’s Camera Roll.

Voice Control is now accessible via a Bluetooth headset (iPhone 3GS).

iTunes’ Genius Mixes automatically creates mixes based on what’s already in your library.

Visual iPhone App Organizer via iTunes.

Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos.

iTunes U content organization.

Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store.

Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store.

Option to “Save as new clip” when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS.

Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on.

Remotely lock iPhone with a passcode via MobileMe.

Paste phone numbers into the keypad.

Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS.

Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing).

Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling.

Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly.
